Shocks and Struts

For shock or strut replacement or servicing, call Ken’s Auto today.

The shocks and struts on your vehicle are as important to safety as they are to providing a smooth ride. As a crucial part of your suspension system, keeping them in good working order is a priority at Ken’s Auto.

Your shock absorbers work with the springs mounted next to your tires to absorb the bumps you would otherwise feel as you drive. While they stop the vehicle from bouncing, the struts provide support to the wheels as well as the braking and steering systems on your car. Both can wear out and should be inspected on a regular basis.

Signs your shocks or struts may be wearing out include:

  • Knocking or rattling when you hit a bump.
  • Excessive bouncing or the car bottoms out going over bumps or curbs.
  • Loud squeaks during slight bouncing.
  • Leaning or swaying on turns, starts and stops.
  • Slow or sluggish response in steering.

Your shocks and struts could last 100,000 miles or more, depending on your driving habits. Getting them inspected at 50,000 miles and replacing them in pairs is generally recommended.

Maintaining steering, suspension, and shocks/struts

Because these systems work together and are critical in the handling of your car, we recommend regular inspections and servicing of all parts of your steering and suspension.

Maintenance tips:

  • Refer to your owner’s manual for servicing recommendations for steering and suspension components.
  • Replace shocks/struts every 50,000 miles.
  • Check your power steering fluid for leaks and grit. Fluids should be cleaned, and leaks should be repaired immediately.
  • Call our experts to inspect excessive bouncing, squeaky springs, and leaning, as these could indicate a suspension problem.
  • Schedule a wheel alignment if you have been in an accident or hit a pothole and any time you have suspension or front-end work done to maintain even tire wear.
